Bicycle Helmets

Our office provides important education on kids’ safety, including the head protection they need when riding bicycles. Call us at 684-2564 to learn more about what we have to offer through our Johnson County Safe Kids Program, including head measurements for riding helmets. We may be able to supply you with a helmet in exchange for a suggested donation.

Remember to tell your kids to wear their helmets even when riding short distances. Protective headgear can save your child’s life if used correctly. Before you purchase a bicycle helmet, you need to make sure it fits. The helmet should be worn low on the forehead, about two finger-widths above the eyebrows. The inner pads and chin strap should be adjusted to fit snugly so the helmet does not shift up and down or side to side. Make sure you choose a new helmet that meets the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSI) standards; this should be noted on a label or sticker somewhere on the helmet. Used helmets are not recommended.
